Zola Budd Barefoot

Aśleṣā 3rd Pada: Zola Budd

South African-British athlete called the world’s fastest woman. A wisp of a girl at 5’2″ and 83 pounds, she proved herself a distance runner of world-class when she broke Mary Decker’s record.

However, the Moon is in Aśleṣā nakṣatra at 23°21’ in the 3rd pada. This is not Abhukta portion (last 0°50’) of the nakṣatra and danger to life may not exist. However, for a female nativity, this shows “Danger to Father, Patri-lineage” besides danger to “female in-laws”. Zola Budd became long estranged with her father who was later murdered. It was alleged that he was a homosexual. Agni doṣa associated with the 3rd pada of Aśleṣā, shows up in a queer manner with her father turning homosexual and finally being murdered. This Aśleṣā Gaṇḍānta 3rd pada doṣa is substantiated by natural father significator Sun being afflicted by Mars, Rāhu and bādhakeśa Mercury forming a curse combination.

The terrible affliction to 9th house and significator Sun did not end there. Agni tattva rules politics and 9th house afflictions bring in a negative world or destiny factor. Zola’s future at international competition was seriously jeopardized when South Africa was excluded from virtually all major international events because of apartheid. Buffeted by the politics surrounding her African nationality and suffering from nervous exhaustion, she withdrew from sports in May 1988 in Venus daśā Mars antardaśā. Mars rules agni tattva. The affliction ended her track record.

In Venus daśā Rāhu antardaśā she married businessman Mike Pieterse (1989) and had a daughter Lisa in Venus daśā Saturn antardaśā (1995). In April 2006 (Sun daśā Mercury antardaśā) Budd filed for divorce after her husband allegedly moved in with a semi-finalist in the Mrs. United Nations South Africa beauty pageant. The couple later reconciled. The Aśleṣā doṣa pursue her relentlessly.

Aśleṣā 4th Pada: Bruce Hammerslough

Bruce Hammerslough was a noted American astrologer who co-founded of Greenlake Metaphysical Center with Dennis Flaherty. Formerly, he served as the President of the Atlanta and Washington State Astrological Societies. Jupiter as the 8th lord is well placed in the 8th bhāva (even though in Mūla 1st Pada) and will not be the cause of death. Moon as the 3rd lord in 3rd bhāva takes this role due to Bhavat-bhāvaṁ (i.e. count eight houses from eighth bhāva). Moon is also in Aśleṣā gaṇḍānta at 28°59’ which is almost the start of the Abhukta portion (29°10’ Cn).

Interestingly with the advent of Moon daśā in 1983 he became a certified astrologer and in Moon daśā Rāhu antardaśā (1985) he suffered acute illness and was diagnosed ARC (AIDS-related complex). Moon in the 4th pada of Aśleṣā shows serious agni tattva doṣa and the fire in the body will gradually die out. Sun is in debility in Libra (ojas afflicted) and Mars in maraṇa kāraka sthāna in 7th bhāva. Mars in ruchaka mahāpuruṣa yoga does give considerable knowledge and skill in the occult but in MKS it can be deadly, especially when the Moon is in Aśleṣā gaṇḍānta.

A brave man, he chose not to attempt heroic measures and instead suffered the disease for a decade with humor and dignity till his death. He died on 12/27/1995 in Mars daśā Saturn antardaśā. Saturn and Mars become paraspara-kāraka (mutually supportive in by being in kendra) and Saturn is in Leo, aspects the debilitated Sun in Libra indicating that it would destroy the agni tattva.

Mūla 4th Pada: Albert ‘Al’ Gore, Jr.

The fourth pada of Mūla is considered a very fortunate part for the Moon to occupy. All sages attribute rājayoga caused by the blessings of Śrī Vāyu, the wind god. The native is very successful and is like a faithful Hanuman who will realize his potential when blessed with a leader like Rama.

The blessing of the Moon forming a powerful Gajakesari yoga in Mūla nakṣatra (Sagittarius) with Jupiter showed in its daśā which started in Dec 1975. On 1 Mar 1976 (Moon antardaśā) after veteran Congressman Joe Evins announced his retirement, Gore quickly announces his candidacy for U.S. Representative from Tennessee’s Fourth District at the Smith County Courthouse in Carthage. On 2 Nov 1976 (Mars antardaśā)  Al Gore is elected to Congress. After the election he immediately begins to hold a series of town meetings across the district in order to stay in touch with his constituents, a practice he continued throughout his Congressional career.

Nov1978 (Rāhu antara), 1980 (Saturn antara), 1982 (Mercury antara)  Al Gore is reelected to Congress showing the manner in which the Moon continued to raise him in every antardaśā. In Ketu antardaśā (1983) on learning Tennessee Senator Howard Baker would not seek reelection, Gore declared his Senate candidacy. On 6 Nov 1984  (Moon daśā Venus antardaśā) Gore is elected to the U.S. Senate with more than 60% of the vote.

On 9 Jul 1992 (Mars daśā Sun antardaśā) Bill Clinton announced the selection of Al Gore as his vice-presidential running mate, suddenly returning Gore to the national stage. The vāyu tattva ‘Hanuman’ of the democrats had found his Ram. On 3 Nov 1992  (Mars daśā Moon antardaśā) Bill Clinton is elected president breaking all ‘conventional views’ that the pair should always be ‘north-south’ and ‘old-young’ for a winning combination. Clinton and Gore create a working partnership that established Gore as one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history.

It is evident that the Mūla Moon in 4th pada is rejoicing the coming out from gaṇḍānta drekkāṇa (10°) of Sagittarius just as the Maharṣi taught. Yet there must be a sad side to everything like every coin having two faces – the intrinsic nature of mind and emotion. Vāyu tattva is governed by Saturn who is also significator (sthira kāraka) of elder siblings.

Al Gore’s only sibling, elder sister Nancy LaFon Gore Hunger died after a battle with lung cancer at 46 years. Nancy was born in 1938 and was ten years older than Al Gore. She met Frank Hunger in1959 (age 21) and they were married in the Gore farm in 1966. When Nancy was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1982, Frank flew her to Nashville for treatments. She died on 11 Jul 1984 when Al Gore was under Moon daśā Venus antardaśā. When Venus is in the 11th bhāva, then the elder sibling may not live long but the birth in 4th pada of Mūla indicates that the death will be a painful gradual separation as would be indicated by vāyu tattva (Saturn).

Al Gore has four children – Karenna Gore (b. 6 Aug 1973), Kristin Gore (b. 5 Jun 1977), Sarah Gore (b. 7 Jan 1979) and Albert Arnold Gore III (b. 19 Oct 1982). Al Gore III is the youngest child and only son and shares the name with his father and grandfather (see note on names and Mūla gaṇḍānta). As such this brings in tri-devī doṣa as a son is born after three daughters (Parāśara) which indicates danger to the life of the youngest.

On 3 Apr 1989 (Mars daśā Saturn antardaśā) as the Gores and their six-year-old son Albert were leaving a baseball game, Albert ran across the street to see his friend and was hit by a car. He was thrown 30 feet (9 m), and then traveled along the pavement for another 20 feet (6 m). Albert III was tended to by two nurses who happened to be present during the accident. The Gores spent the next month in the hospital. Gore also commented: “Our lives were consumed with the struggle to restore his body and spirit.” Later in August 1991, Gore announced that his son’s accident was a factor in his decision not to run for president during the 1992 presidential election. Moon in Mūla is the dispositor of the debilitated 5th lord Mars in Cancer lagna that conjoins Saturn and afflicts vāyu tattva.

Mūla 3rd Pada: Ingeborg Bachmann

Austrian poet, dramatist, and novelist, Ingeborg Bachmann was a leading voice in post-war German literature. The prestigious The Festival of German-Language Literature which awards the “Ingeborg Bachmann Prize” since 1977 is named after her. During her lifetime Bachmann, was known first and foremost as a poet, but she ceased to write poetry in the 1960s and focused on prose. In these later works feminist themes came to the fore. Bachmann was a reclusive, but socially engaged writer.

In 1953 (Sun daśā Moon antardaśā), she travelled to Rome, Italy, where she spent the large part of the following years working on poems, essays and short stories as well as opera libretti in collaboration with Hans Werner Henze, which soon brought with them international fame and numerous awards. With the advent of Moon daśā in 1954 she started living in Rome. Moon is the 8th lord in lagna and conjoins the 12th lord (foreign residence) Ketu, which is also lord of the janma nakṣatra Mūlā. Moon promises undying fame and this will happen after she starts living and touring in a foreign country, just like Artemus Ward and others born in Mūla nakṣatra in Sagittarius Lagna.

Bachmann was appointed to the newly created position as chair of poetics at the University of Frankfurt (Age 33, Moon daśā Saturn antardaśā), where she lectured on poetry and the existential situation of the writer. Venus in maraṇa kāraka sthāna in 6th bhāva, although in own sign, did leave its sorrowful impact. Her relationship with the Swiss author Max Frisch who she met in 1958, bestowed the role of the second protagonist in Frisch’s 1964 novel “Mein Name sei Gantenbein” upon her. His infidelity caused the separation of the couple in 1962 (Moon daśā Venus antardaśā). The likely terrible impact on Bachmann could have been that she ceased to write poetry in the 1960s.

Ingeborg died on 17 Oct 1973 in hospital three weeks after a bedroom fire. The blaze was caused by an unextinguished cigarette in the night of 26 Sep 1973. Fire fighters found her unconscious and badly burnt with a third of her body having serious burn injuries. The 3rd bhāva from the āruḍha lagna (Aries) is Gemini which is occupied by Sun-Rāhu combination clearly confirming the immediate cause of death as fire[1]. Gemini is the bādhaka sign indicating death in a foreign land and as māraka bhāva it houses the planets that will furnish the mṛtyu daśā – Rāhu daśā Rāhu antardaśā.

For female nativity, the 3rd Pada is Jala tattva doṣa which points at Venus. She died in the śūla daśā of Taurus which is occupied by Venus and has the dṛṣṭi of Saturn, exalted but retrograde. Taurus is also the 8th bhāva from Kāraka Lagna Libra [Ātmakāraka Saturn]. Another aspect of gaṇḍānta is the ‘Tithī gaṇḍānta’ which we discuss later.

[1] Rumors have persisted that she did not succumb to the burns but to her long habit of compulsive pill-taking, which was prevented by the stay in hospital. This is quite absurd as nobody dies because they stopped taking a drug which is not a medication. The chart does not point to any such cause of death and instead the Rāhu daśā-antardaśā does indicate that there shall be such rumors. It just shows that her fans love her too much and cannot accept her sudden death.

Mūla 2nd Pada: Darryl Sittler

Darryl Glen Sittler is a legend in professional ice hockey. He played in the National Hockey League from 1970 (Venus daśā Mercury antardaśā[1]) until 1985 (Moon daśā Saturn antardaśā).
On 7 Feb 1976, Sittler set an NHL record that still stands, for most points scored in one game when he recorded ten points (six goals, four assists). He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989 in Moon daśā Venus antardaśā. Moon is in Mūla nakṣatra second pada (jala – mother, female) and he was born at night confirming that the affliction would exist but either to mother or wife. However, in the 7th bhāva Moon promises undying fame and “ice” is the frozen water signified by the jala tattva planets Moon trines Venus in kāma trikoṇa supported by the freezing Saturn in 3rd house which gives great staying power.

We can use a more accurate daśā system to time this Maharaja yoga – the dvādasottari (112) daśā which is applicable if lagna is in Venus aṁśa. In this chart the navāṁśa lagna is Libra confirming its use. Since Venus is the overlord of this daśā, its effects re felt throughout life and it does not have a specific daśā period attributed to it. The entire rājayoga period from 1975-85 was covered during the daśā of lagneśa Mercury which forms the Maharaja yoga with Venus.

Dvādasottari Daśā

Moon:  2038-07-09  –  2059-07-10

What we are examining is the effect of the Mūla 2nd Pada (jala) which is to afflict mother, spouse or female relation. In the 7th bhāva, the Moon is most likely to afflict spouse. In addition, it is in 8th bhāva in navāṁśa which is maṅgalya sthāna (loss of spouse). It acts as māraka for marriage.

Treat 7th bhāva (Sagittarius) as lagna of spouse, then we see that whatever we had discussed for Charles Browne (Artemus Ward) is also applicable here and the 4th sign from the navāṁśa of Moon will furnish the death inflictor as well as the part of body that gets the disease. Moon is in Taurus navāṁśa and 4th bhāva from this is Leo showing the stomach-digestion region. Rāhu is placed in Leo navāṁśa.

His wife Wendy suffered from colon cancer which was detected in 1998. The dvādasottari daśā was Rāhu and antardaśā Jupiter. Note these planets exchanging signs in rāśi and being in mutual kendra in navāṁśa. Although cured initially, the cancer recurred in 2000. Doctors discovered two spots on Wendy Sittler’s liver and deemed the new cancer inoperable. Darryl said that they were going to start chemotherapy treatments and hoped the cancer could be stalled, maybe “a miracle”.

Wendy was very strong throughout this ordeal. She’s accepted her situation and talked to their children to make sure they carry on with their dreams and pursuits. She even participated in a “Cancer walk” in August 2001. Mrs. Wendy Sittler was 53 when she died at her home on 6 Oct 2001 Saturday, after a lengthy battle with colon cancer and with her husband at her side.

Dvādasottari daśā Rāhu-Mercury easily explains the event as the second house from Upapada (UL) in Leo owned by Mercury and aspected by Rāhu. In the navāṁśa, the 4th bhāva from Moon (Mūla 2nd pada) is Leo with Rāhu which aspects Mercury in Sagittarius (8th from Moon) and Saturn (disease). In Vimśottari it is Rāhu daśā Jupiter antardaśā which is not as easy to use for prediction with the chart of Venusian navāṁśa.

[1] Conjunction of the Lagneśa Mercury with 5th lord Venus generates Maharaja yoga. He will be a ‘King of kings’ in his path – ice hockey. Together these planets set him off on a journey (sporting career) which would make him a legend.

Mūla 1st Pada: Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen was born Carlos Irwin Estevez and is a top Hollywood actor. He was born as the third son of Martin Sheen. Sheen has two older brothers, Emilio Estevez and Ramon Estevez, and a younger sister, Renée Estevez, all actors and children of actor Martin Sheen and artist Janet Templeton. This is a typical chart of tri-deva doṣa where three sons are followed by one daughter.

Saturn is extremely well placed forming Sasa Mahāpuruṣa yoga which starts functioning from 10th year – that’s when he made an acting debut in “The Execution of Private Slovik”. Further, the tenth lord from the Moon is Mercury which is 5th lord from lagna placed in the 4th bhāva forming rājayoga and nipuṇa yoga with the 4th lord Sun. This yoga functions from a very young age. The natural rising of the Sun is the 21st year, which is when he appeared in “Wall Street” (1986). From the 22nd year (1987 – Platoon) his career rocketed into stardom. This coincided with Saturn daśā.

Chaturāśīti sama daśā (applicable if 10th lord is in 10th house by sign placement):
Jup:  1962-11-13  –  1974-11-13
Ven:  1974-11-13  –  1986-11-13
Sat:  1986-11-13  –  1998-11-13
Sun:  1998-11-13  –  2010-11-13

Sarpa Yoga is formed by the presence of four malefic planets in kendra. They also form various rājayoga and mahāpuruṣa yoga giving success, recognition and wealth but the poison of the sarpa yoga would be terrible. All the rājayogas of Saturn (Sasa Mahāpuruṣa), Ketu (own sign Scorpio), Sun (mūlatrikoṇa Leo with nipuṇa yoga) and exalted Rāhu in lagna come with varying dose of poison. Mercury alone is given the task of fighting this yoga, which means family and friends come to the rescue.

He entered a drug and alcohol rehab clinic in August 1990 in Saturn daśā Moon antardaśā and should have moved in to permanent residency as the chandrāṣṭama with Moon in mūla gaṇḍānta threatens destruction of mind and body. Released in Mercury antardaśā, he hit the skids again in 1994, trashing five hotel rooms while flying high with booze and expensive designer-drugs. He entered detox in July 1994. The press reported that he exhibited highly unstable behavior.

Sarpa yoga gives a huge sexual appetite which is insatiable especially when triggered and supported by chandrāṣṭama and mūla gaṇḍānta. Charlie has estimated his sexual encounters at approximately 5,000 women. Not only that, at Heidi Fleiss’ pandering trial, he testified that he had paid over $50,000 for sexual services from Heidi’s girls from 1991-1993 (Moon and Mars antardaśā). He was arraigned on battery charges on 24 Feb 1997 (Venus antardaśā). On 20 May 1998 he complained of tingling sensations and difficulty walking when in reality it was drug overdose. He has never been able to finish a detox program – that’s the problem with sarpa yoga, you have to focus on the single natural benefic in kendra else everything in the chart falls through.

Sheen has been married three times and has five children, including one with his former high school girlfriend, Paula Profit. On 6 Jun 2001, his 16-year-old daughter Cassandra was arrested at a Los Angeles clothing boutique on burglary charges.

His first marriage with model Donna Peele on 3 Sep1995 (Saturn daśā Jupiter antardaśā) lasted five weeks and they divorced on 19 Nov 1996.

He and Denise Richards married on 15 Jun 2002[1] and their daughter Sam, was born March 9, 2004 at 10:57 PM in Los Angeles. On 2 Mar 2005 Denise Richards pregnant with their second child, filed for divorce accusing Sheen of alcohol and drug abuse and threats of violence. Daughter Lola was born on “Wednesday night” 1 Jun 2005 in Los Angeles. The divorce was finalized in November 2006.

Sheen married Brooke Mueller on 30 May 2008, who later gave birth to their twin sons, Bob and Max on 14 Mar 2009, who were six weeks premature. Venus can protect premature delivery in the 7th month. On Christmas morning of 2009 Brooke called the emergency police line claiming he was threatening her with a knife. Sheen was arrested at 11:20 AM that morning in Aspen, CO. Their divorce became final in Feb 2011.

As of March 2011, Sheen was concurrently living with pornographic actress Bree Olson and model and graphic designer Natalie Kenly, whom he collectively nicknamed his “goddesses”. It is obvious that the effects of the sarpa yoga are still very strong and chandrāṣṭama with mūla gaṇḍānta makes him a dangerous at night when the demons of mūla nakṣatra possess his consciousness. Like Anthony Hopkins he has already had three ‘official marriages’ if we can count the five week first marriage.

Mūla 1st Pada: Anthony Hopkins

In the chart of Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins Moon is in Mūla gaṇḍānta at 1°04’ just outside the Abhukta range. It is very similar to the chart of  Charles Farrar Browne and acts as the 8th lord in Lagna which gives great fame especially from a foreign country. Yet it is not alone. It conjoins the Sun, Mercury and Venus which generate a siṁhāsana yoga[1], dharma-karmādhipati yoga[2], Nipuṇa yoga[3] etc.

  1. As the 7th lord in Lagna Mercury overpowers the Moon to determine the daśā (fortune, destiny) as Dvisaptati sama daśā (72 year cycles) instead of the Moon determined Vimśottari daśā (120 years).
  2. This placement of lagneśa in 7th bhāva or 7th lord in lagna automatically empowers Venus to guide and protect the chart as it is the significator of the 7th bhāva. In addition, Venus is also in lagna conjoining the 7th bhāva.
  3. Kāla-amṛta yoga is present in this chart as all planets are in the half from Rāhu to Ketu reckoned in the zodiacal direction. This makes Ketu the dominant planet of the chart and protector and guide. Because of this feature Ketu will not cause the untold suffering that one born in Mūla gaṇḍānta has to face.
  4. Finally, there is a parivartana yoga between Jupiter which is both śubhapati (lord of Moon sign) and lagneśa and Saturn. This causes transfer of the evils of gaṇḍānta to Saturn thereby diverting the shocks and suffering.

These factors have caused the shift of the mūla gaṇḍānta to a house of Saturn instead of killing the native. Yet mars as the controller of agni tattva does its bit and he is the only child of his parents as Mars in the third bhāva destroys the siblings. Saturn is also the lord of 3rd bhāva and this is where the mūla doṣa shifted leaving the lagna to prosper. The Sun is in Lagna and he suffers from dyslexia performing very poorly at school even when he was a superb in the arts. Hopkins attended the Jones’ West Monmouth Boys School in Pontypool and then later in Cowbridge Grammer School. His path in life was very blurred until he met Richard Burton at the age of 15, which encouraged him to try acting. As a result, he joined the College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. The rest is history.

While we may attribute his three marriages to the kṛṣṇa caturdasī doṣa, but this seems to be yet another strange feature of the mūla 1st pada gaṇḍānta. It could the Mercury doṣa of Sagittarius[4] and Mercury is the 7th lord from the sign.

[1] Mercury as 10th lord in lagna promises brilliance in its line of work – he is a very versatile actor

[2] Mercury as 10th lord and Sun as 9th lord

[3] Conjunction of Mercury and Sun gives great skill relating to at least one line of activity, especially when related to lagna or 10th bhāva.

[4] Seven mixed form signs have doṣa (flaws). Pisces – Sun, Aquarius – Moon, Libra – Mars, Sagittarius – Mercury, Capricorn – Jupiter, Gemini – Venus, Virgo – Saturn. Graha devatā mantra removes doṣa quickly.

ysr_chart
Details about the chart can be read in a previous issue of the Jyotish Digest. In the chart of Y. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR), Moon is in Mūla gaṇḍānta in the 12th bhāva. The exact position of the Moon at 1°28’ is just outside the Abhukta mūla range of 0°50’ indicating that the bay would survive. This gaṇḍānta afflicts the agni tattva and Sun is the lord of the 8th house as well in this chart.

Y.S. Raja Reddy, father of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was killed in a bomb attack in his native Kadapa district while he was returning to Pulivendula from his farm house in a car May 23, 1998. This murder of father incident happened in Mars daśā Moon antardaśā in the chart of YSR showing the power of the gaṇḍānta Moon to bring sudden losses and suffering. Affliction to agni tattva also afflicts father and male elders besides son.

YSR died due to a helicopter crash in a storm when the chopper was hit by lightening[1]. The accident (Mars or Ketu) and death happened on 2nd September 2009 at about 9.02 am. The accident and/or death occurred near Rudravaram in his Rāhu daśā Ketu antardaśā. It is noteworthy that Ketu conjoins Mars in the 6th house in navāṁśa. Jaimini teaches that if Mars and Ketu conjoin the 2nd or 6th bhāva in navāṁśa, then the native is killed by partner. This can mean spouse or any other important partner or someone travelling with the native. In any case, it just proves that affliction to agni tattva, which includes Sun, Mars and Ketu shows a violent sudden death, a gaṇḍānta that leaves a vacuum and everyone in shock.

If we were to follow the planet in 8th house, or 8th lord then, Saturn is in the 8th house and in Gemini navāṁśa. The 4th from this is Virgo which is occupied by Mars and Ketu in navāṁśa.

It is also noteworthy that in both the examples, either the Moon is in Lagna or the lord of Moon sign (śubhapati) is in Lagna. The direct association of the Lagna with the gaṇḍānta Moon does bring the gaṇḍānta doṣa on the native. Yet there can be some peculiar instances where this may not work, as in the next case of Anthony Hopkins.

[1] Mercury rules natural calamities and lightening is definitely ruled by Jupiter – these confirm the natal position of debilitated Jupiter aspecting the 3rd house from ārūḍha lagna showing the manner in which death is to come

Nakṣatra Gaṇḍānta

Gaṇḍa has been clearly defined by Nārada as the period of a prahara (3 hours) covering the junction of agni and jala rāśi. These junctions are (1) Jyeṣṭha-Mūla (in Scorpio-Sagittarius) , (2) Aśleṣā-Maghā (in Cancer-Leo) and (3) Revatī-Aśvinī (in Pisces-Aries).

Maharṣi Vasiṣṭha defines a flaw called ‘Abhukta Mūla’ for these three junctions and any child born during the 180 minutes when the Moon is at these junctions. Period of 90 minutes is one Kāla (as in kālachakra) at the end of Aśleṣā, Jyeṣṭha and Revatī and 90 minutes at the start of Maghā, Mūla and Aśvinī is to be treated as Abhukta Mūla doṣa. The word Abhukta implies (a) uneaten as in fasting or being denied food for sustenance, (b) unenjoyed or unused as in abstinence indicating one who is neither a source of joy nor of any use to the world (society). It shows one who is like an unexpended unannounced guest disturbing and shocking the existing structure. The conjunction of the water and fire signs is treated as the conjunction between the Moon (water) and Sun (fire) which is like amāvāsya and Soma (nectar of life and immortality) is not available for the animal kingdom as the Moon hides in plant kingdom.

The exact lunar transit in one kāla (90min) is 0°50’ arc. The Abhukta Mūla doṣa portion of water signs is at 29°10’ to 30°00’ while in the fire signs it is in the beginning at 0°00’ to 0°50’.

This view of the Abhukta Mūla as defined by Nārada and Vasiṣṭha is supported by the seers Brahma, Saunaka, while Maharṣi Kaśyapa gives a higher prominence to the gaṇḍānta in Aśleṣā-Maghā and Jyeṣṭha-Mūla as producing serious Abhukta Mūla doṣa while underplaying Revatī-Aśvinī.

Nakṣatra ṣoḍaśāṁśa

Brahma defines this Abhukta Mūla in terms of space instead of time. The span of a nakṣatra is 13°20’ (800’) and this portion of 50’ is one-sixteenth (1/16th) portion of the Nakṣatra. In essence, every nakṣatra is divided into four pada of 3°20’ each which in turn are divided into four parts of 0°50’ each. The gaṇḍānta is in the first 1/16th portion of the nakṣatra in fire/odd signs while it is in the last 1/16th portion of the nakṣatra in the water/even signs. These sixteen portions of the nakṣatra are like the sixteen tithī called ṣoḍaśī where 15 tithī manifest and the 16th is śūnya (void).

Other views

Confusions exist about the definition of the Abhukta Mūla in the definitions based on tie and space. The word Prahara (प्रहर) is defined in jyotiṣa as a fixed period of 3 hours reckoned from sunrise. There are eight prahara in a day of 24 hours and the junctions of these prahara are fixed. In North India these are also referred to as ghaḍī (घडी) meaning ‘the watch’. The first prahara or a day is ruled by the lord of the day and the subsequent follow the order of the kālachakra. Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Moon and Rāhu is the regular order of planets in the Kālachakra.

If sunrise is at 6:00’am on Sunday then the starting time for the prahara of that Sunday are – Sun (6am), Mars (9am), Jupiter (Noon), Mercury (3pm), Venus (6pm), Saturn (9pm), Moon (Midnight) and Rāhu (3am). Now, if on that day the Moon was to enter Sagittarius at 5:15’pm, then we can say that it entered Sagittarius in Mercury prahara. Since this prahara extends from 3-6 pm, then according to some views, the Abhukta Mūla of Mūla nakṣatra is merely 45 minutes from 5:15’ to 6:00’pm as the Mercury prahara ends at 6:00’pm.

We believe that this is a distortion of the definition of Abhukta Mūla. Brahma has done well to define this in space terms as 50’arc else this unnecessary controversy could have left us with doubts. In the above example, using Nārada and other sages definition, the Abhukta Mūla portion would be in two parts – (a) Jyeṣṭha Abhukta: 3:45’pm-5:15’pm (90 minutes before transit) and (b) Mūla Abhukta: 5:15’pm-6:45’pm (90 minutes after transit).

Blemish of Abhukta

Abhukta means that which cannot be enjoyed or adored. All the sages are unanimous in the opinion that a child born in any of the six Abhukta portions should be given away (for adoption) and taken back after 8 years have been completed. The 8 years refers to the 8 prahara portions that need to be completed [karma results of Moon manifest @ 1 prahara per year]. What is implied is that if this is not done then the separation with the child shall be very painful and severe suffering is indicated.

Maharṣi Saunaka concurs and advises that the propitiatory rituals for taking the child back should be conducted on the day of Janma Nakṣatra (which is the gaṇḍānta nakṣatra) when 9th year of the child commences.

Vasiṣṭha Riders

In the case of Mūla gaṇḍānta (nakṣatra), the first pada birth does not cause evil to father if the birth is in the night. This is because agni tattva doṣa is absent at night just as maṅgalika doṣa (caused by Mars, the ruler of agni tattva) is negligible at night. Similarly, for one born in the daytime, the second pada doṣa of death of mother will not occur as jala tattva doṣa does not manifest strongly for day birth. If the remedial measures are done within one year, then the Abhukta mūla doṣa does not afflict father whereas if it is done within 3 years then mother is safeguarded.

The nakṣatra is divided into 15 parts each called tithī-aṁśa and various results are attributed for each part.

Pada Doṣa

The effect of the Abhukta spreads to the drekkāṇa (10°) of the gaṇḍānta nakṣatra. Each nakṣatra is 13°20’ span comprising four pada of 3°20’ each. According to most authorities, the effect of the gaṇḍānta junction spreads on either side to 10° (= 1 drekkāṇa or 3 pada). The first three pada of agni rāśi (Aśvinī, Maghā and Mūla) and the last three pada of jala rāśi (Aśleṣā, Jyeṣṭha and Revatī) have flaws.

Additional Blemish

Sage Nārada adds that birth in Mūla nakṣatra will destroy (very evil) the father-in-law while birth in Aśleṣā will destroy Mother-in-Law. Jyeṣṭha is evil for Elder Brother-in-Law while Maghā is deadly for Younger Brother-in-Law. But this blemish does not apply to the last quarter of Mūla (and Maghā) and 1st quarter of Aśleṣā (Jyeṣṭha) which are actually auspicious being beyond the 10° range of Abhukta blemish.

Names changes and Mūla

One interesting observation is that the popular name drops “Philip” and uses only “Anthony Hopkins”. Charles Brown also changed his surname to “Browne” and became famous with yet another name “Artemus Wand”. “Al Gore” has almost become the name for “Albert Gore” while Carlos Irwin Estevez is popularly “Charlie Sheen”. Even Ingeborg Bachmann when in Italy in 1954-1955, wrote political columns under the pseudonym Ruth Keller for the Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung.

Observation: If the afflicted tattva is in the 7th bhāva (Rudra gāyatrī), then the native shall become very successful in business or trade and shall amass a fortune. They tend to create a brand or an exclusive commodity.

Mūla Nakṣatra Birth

Mūla 1st Pada: Charles Farrar Browne

Artemus Ward was the pen name of Charles Farrar Browne, who started at 13 as an apprentice to a printer. He set type for several newspapers in New England before a Boston printshop hired him in 1851 in Venus daśā Jupiter antardaśā. His first humorous sketches, signed ‘Chub’ appeared in the Boston Carpet-bag. During the next 2 years he was a printer in several Ohio towns. In 1853 (Saturn antardaśā) he became an editor on the Toledo Commercial. Between 1857 (Venus-Mercury) and 1861 (Sun-Mars) he was an editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

With the advent of Sun daśā his fortune turned as in 1860, he became editor of Vanity Fair, a humorous New York weekly, which proved a failure. His Janma Nakṣatra is Mūla and although he is not in the very dangerous Abhukta (0°50’) portion, his birth is still in the first pada which shows affliction to agni tattva. Although prima facie exalted, the Sun actually becomes very malefic for Mūla gaṇḍānta born natives. In addition, it combusts the lagneśa Jupiter[1]. His pen named character “Artemus Ward” was the favorite author of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Before presenting ‘The Emancipation Proclamation’ to his Cabinet, Lincoln read to them the latest episode, ‘Outrage in Utiky’. Mark Twain was also very inspired by “Artemus Ward”.

Moon is the lord of the 8th bhāva and according to Jaimini, the manner of death is to be known from the sign in the 4th bhāva from its navāṁśa position. Moon is in Aries navāṁśa making Cancer, the chest region, as the area of disease which can bring death (gaṇḍānta). As 8th lord in Lagna conjoining the 12th lord Ketu it shows foreign residence. Moon in lagna also promises fame and popularity. With the advent of Moon daśā in 1866, Charles went to England. He became exceedingly popular both as a lecturer and as a contributor to Punch, as promised by the Moon in Lagna.

In the spring of the following year, his health gave way and he died of tuberculosis (lung/chest disease as indicated by 4H from navāṁśa Moon) at Southampton on March 6, 1867 in Moon daśā Mars antardaśā. Moon is the 8th lord whereas Mars is in the 3rd bhāva, which is 8th from 8th bhāva. It is also the dispositor of lagneśa and is stationed in malefic sign. In navāṁśa it conjoins Ketu forming piśāca yoga and will carry out the mūla gaṇḍānta ‘agni flaw’ of first pada as it is the significator of agni tattva. The Moon transited over natal Mars in Aquarius on the date of death. Tithī was śukla pratipada ruled by the Sun (agni) in 5th house. It is evident that Moon in gaṇḍānta did give premature and sudden death by disease based on 64th navāṁśa[2] and Moon is the 8th lord.

[1] Jupiter (23°57’) is within the 11° combustion range from Sun (14°50’) and shows the starting phase of combustion – which going to be experienced for about 22 years from birth in entirety and thereafter he will shine with spiritual luster. But the burnout rate is high for one born in Mūla gaṇḍānta.

[2] The 64th navāṁśa is the sign in the 4th bhāva from the navāṁśa position of the Moon in navāṁśa (Aries) which is Cancer indicating Chest region, Tuberculosis. Method is emphasized by Jaimini.
