Śrī Jagannāth Center announces its first workshop in the study of Dhana Yoga. This workshop shall lay the foundation for the study of wealth and career directions. There are three pivots to the study of life and these are the three charts – lagna, sūrya and chandra chakra. The role played by each of these charts is to be examined in the first day of this two-day workshop. On the second day, we examine the role of Devaguru Bṛhaspati as the kāraka. It is interesting that all three sattva guṇa planets – Sun, Moon and Jupiter play such an important role in life.

Workshop Programme

Saturday, 18 Feb 2017: Sun and Moon
Sūrya is the controller of Rajas guṇa. We learn about Sūrya Kendra and the position of the four digpāla, especially Kubera the controller of wealth in the horoscope. We get to see why some people are truly blessed and have a greater access to wealth resources due to the blessing of Kubera. The effect of parivartana as well as double parivartana shall be examined alone with some case studies so that the concept of Sūrya Kendra becomes very clear.
Chandra is the suppresser of Tamas guṇa. Chandra kendra play a crucial role in deciding the four ayana – dharma, artha, kāma and mokṣa. We develop the theme from asta lagna and amalā yoga to show why the tenth bhāva from Chandra Lagna is so important for initiating one’s career and path. After all the mind is the real boss of the being. In addition, we learn some Chandra Yoga as taught by Parāśara including sunaphā, anaphā and durudharā yogas, chandra upachaya yoga including the derivation of upachaya based on asta lagna. Kemadruma yoga, daridra yoga and natural maturity will be touched.

Sunday, 19 Feb 2017: Dhana Karaka Brhaspati
The benediction of Jupiter, the guru of the devas. Examine its power to enhance abilities by association. Kāraka Bhāva – examine the 2nd, 11th and 5th, 9th bhāva signified by Jupiter. Free movement of graha is like free flow of sound waves. We study how graha in adjoining bhāva or argala bhāva affect this free flow of Guru kṛpā. The power of Guru’s blessings can be clearly seen in the lives of Lata Mangeshkar and some such blessed souls. We learn how this shows in the chart and how Jupiter can represent the blessings of Īśvara.
We examine some Dhana Yogas in this first Workshop on Dhana.

The four spiritual paths of karma-yoga, bhakti-yoga, rāja-yoga, and jñāna-yoga examined through Jyotiṣa. Starting with Puruṣārtha as Jyotiṣa Foundation, we learn how the desires in the soul shall manifest. Pain and suffering is not due to the desire itself, but due to attachment to the desire.

The four spiritual paths of yoga viz. karma, bhakti, raja, and jñāna are those of the chara ātmakāraka with other charakāraka. While all four paths are very desirable, not all are easy for the individual. We examine the formation of these yogas, their obstacles and the soul’s journey through this mundane existence.

Adhyātma Jyotiṣa Workshop by Pt. Sanjay Rath

chakra-sittingAdhyātma refers to the Supreme Spirit as well as one’s own; belonging to self or concerning self or individual personality. Self-realisation is what all spiritual paths aim to achieve, either as the final objective itself or an intermediate stage. Either way jyotiṣa, as the eye of the Vedas, is what helps us to see and know ourselves. This is the real jyotiṣa ocean that Ādi Shankara was referring to before his debate with Mandana Mishra (later Sureshwara). Every great journey must start with a tiny step. And this is what we aim to take up at the holy Sivananda Yoga Farm by starting with Vedic Cosmology and the Horoscope [The teachings are based primarily on Shiva Mahāpurāṇa, various upaniṣad, jyotiṣa classics etc.]

Tuesday, July 4th
AM: overview of multiple lokas; 14 loka and tala of Brahma mapped into the horoscope; seven lokas in seven chakras, their shape, devatā and Sanskrit akṣara; understanding positions of graha, nakṣatra, and various devatā; in essence you will get a three-dimensional view of jyotiṣa as well as its map to your chakras, especially mūlādhāra, bhū-loka, Śrī Śaktī, Vidyeśvara Gaṇeśa and saṅsāra (mundane life on earth).
PM: Nāḍi – iḍā, piṇgalā and suṣumna; their flow in ṣaḍchakra while suṣumna alone moves to sapta-chakra (sahasrāra); vāyu (wind) as the ‘vāha’ (carrier) of saṅsāra; prāṇa in jyotiṣa;
Wednesday, July 5th
AM: aṣṭa charakāraka overview; ātmakāraka is Śiva; choosing rudrākṣa; understanding advaita and dvaita concept in jyotiṣa. kāraka lagna (rāśi) and kārakāṁśa (navāṁśa) as taught by Parāśara; īṣṭa devatā, dharma devatā, pālana devatā in navāṁśa; ṣaṣṭiāṁśa link to vedic knowledge; the Guru and dīkṣa timing;
PM: bandhana and mokṣa; mokṣa yoga of Parāśara

rath_sqAbout Sanjay Rath
Sanjay Rath belongs to a traditional family of astrologers from Bira Balabhadrapur Sasan village of Puri, Orissa, which trace their lineage back to Shri Achyuta Das (Sri Achyutananda). Sanjay studied under his uncle, late Pandit Kasinath Rath. His grandfather, the late Pandit Jagannath Rath, was the Jyotish Ratna of Orissa and authored many books on Jyotish. He began his studies at a tender age, and received the depth of Jyotish only found among those who have been trained in the ancient traditional way of the parampara. He later became a graduate of mechanical engineering and worked for some time with the Government of India. Leaving government service to devote himself completely to Jyotisha, he has the depth of the ancient knowledge with the ability to communicate it to the modern mind.
He uses Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, Jaimini Upadesa Sutras, Brihat Jataka and Saravali as the foundations of Jyotisha and teaches from various other Jyotish scripture and sacred literature such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanisads, Puranas, etc. www.srath.com

Sarbani RathAbout Sarbani Rath
In 1998 when Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra became the principal book on her table she began exclusively studying and practicing Jyotiṣa under the able guidance of Pt. Sanjay Rath. After receiving the Bṛhaspati Gāyatrī in 2002 she has been practising jyotiṣa professionally and teaching as a Jyotiṣa Guru of Śrī Jagannāth Center (SJC). She went on to be the President of SJC in 2008. She continues her passion of reading Vedic literature and after finishing a thorough study of the Garuḍa Purāṇa, is currently working on Sāradātilaka Tantra and Skanda Purāṇa. In 2011 she successfully completed the 5-year long Jaimini Scholar Programme (2007-11) and is a certified Jaimini Scholar of the First Himalaya Batch of Devaguru Bṛhaspati Center (DBC). On the directions of the DBC-Institute she is currently a teacher and Course Co-ordinator of the 2nd Himalaya Batch of the Jaimini Scholar Programme. eye-of-horus-t9848The most difficult of the classics in Vedic Astrology is the Upadesha Sutra of Maharsi Jaimini. Needless to say there are many scholars who have studied this when they reach that level where they have a fairly good mastery over the standard texts and have digested Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra to a decent level of competence. A competence that allows their minds to move through the sutra like thread in a needle stitching the various sutras into a fine cosmic diagram. There are a number of pitfalls and only a total humility in the humble mind that brings reverence to the great Maharsi Jaimini, allows these sutra to open up to an endless stream. A stream that is meant to achieve the highest purpose of any branch of Vedic knowledge.

Another problem that is consistently seen is the young mind taking anything written by a commentator as the final and only truth in the sutra. Nothing is final, nobody understands everything. Every scholar of the past, present and the future is yet another seeker of the upadesha sutra, struggling to see the big picture.

Netraha Yoga

In this context let me discuss just one sutra which is composed of just a few words in the third pada of the first adhyaya.

शुक्रात् गौण पदस्थो राहुः सूर्य दृष्टो नेत्रहा
śukrāt gauṇa padastho rāhuḥ sūrya dṛṣṭo netrahā

Reference an article by Shanmukha titled Jaimini on Blindness

Shri Iranganti Rangacharya has followed the commentator Somanath in deciphering this sutra as follows:

“If Rahu occupies the Arudha of 5th house of Lagna and aspected by Sun, there will be loss to eyesight. Gaunapada means Panchama Arudha (A5).” – Shri Somanatha in Kalpalatha (Sanskrit)

“If Panchama Arudha (A5) is occupied by Rahu and aspects by Sun, and then there will be loss of eyesight.” – Shri Iranganti Rangacharya

While Shri Somanatha has stated the Gaunapada means Panchama Arudha, has explained the teachings of Shri Rangacharya as follows:

” गौण –> ग (3) ण (5), 53 divided by 12 = 5, that is 5th; पद –> Arudha; So, according to Somanatha and Sri Rangacharya, gounapada means Panchama Arudha”

That is a very brilliant interpretation of Gaunapada using the Katapayadi Varga. However, the other statement made is the interpretation of the word – शुक्र (Shukra) where he writes

” शुक्र –> श(5), र (2) , 25 divided by 12 = 1 , that is lagna”

There are two errors in this argument

Error #1: Removing the matra from the word शुक्र (śukra), we have the consonants श (śa) and क (ka)

The Katapayadi Varga for this is श (śa) = 5 and क (ka) = 1; reverse this we get 15; Now expunge multiples of 12 and the remainder is 3

Therefore the numerical value of शुक्र (śukra) = 3 or third house. The first error is an incorrect calculation which shows Shukra as meaning Lagna whereas the calculation actually shows third house.

Error #2: Maharsi Jaimini has explicitly stated previously that the Katapayadi Varga shall only be applicable for Bhava and not for Graha. This means if the Graha names are mentioned at all, in any place, they have to be interpreted only as the planet

Else, why was Rahu or Surya not interpreted as numbers like it was done for Shukra?

To our knowledge, there are two completely different interpretations of this Sutra. One of these has been taught in the Jaimini Scholar Program and is also given in the book Maharsi Jaimini krta Upadesha Sutra.

Interpretation #1: śukra+āt gauṇa pada+astho rāhuḥ sūrya dṛṣṭo netra+hā

āt is an emphasis like ‘further’; the argument that shukra has to indicate Lagna as reference point holds no water as there are umpteen sutra without direct reference to lagna and only referring to the bhava in question

Translation: “Further, Shukra associating the Gauna-Pada with Rahu and Surya aspects causes damage to the eye [sight]”

In this interpretation, the Gauna-Pada has been taken to mean the first vyaya-pada as taught by Maharsi Parashara in BPHS. It is based on the high teaching that “the feet shall go to where we put our money”. People who spend money on alcohol will go to the bar, people who spend money on books go to the library … in this manner the guna of the person changes based on where the feet (twelfth house) travel. And in turn this is based on the expenditure (also twelfth house). Thus both “feet” and “expenditure” are linked and in turn they influence the guna that shall dominate. More about this in Parasara Jyotisa Couse.

Secondly, this sutra is not restrcited to Rashi Drsti alone as some have started calling Rashi Drsti as “Jaimini Drsti” without realising that Parashara taught this even before he taught Graha dristi.

We have given ample examples in COVA and other books. Just look for a connection between 12th house and/or Upapada (UL) with Sun, Venus and Rahu. Rashi drsti can cause permanent damage while graha drsti can show diseases with time or those that maybe cured. Bear in mind that the second house deals with the physical eye while the tenth house, being 9th from second house, performs the ‘dharma’ of the eyes i.e. to see or have vision.

Addenda

The dictum that affliction to the fifth house from Venus leads to Netra Roga from BPHS is based on a totally different yoga called Acchadana Drsti of Graha.

The Acchadana Drsti of the planets are seen from the various houses as follows:

  1. Seventh from Sun,
  2. Ninth from Moon,
  3. Eleventh from Mars
  4. First from Mercury
  5. Third from Jupiter and
  6. Fifth from Venus

It is for this reason that an affliction coming to the fifth bhava from Venus causes loss of sight or eye troubles. We must commend Shanmukha for having stumbled on this ‘affliction to fifth from Venus’ but would like to say that this is different

Devaguru Bṛhaspati Centre (DBC) announces its series of Vyāsa Workshops to be held at Delhi, India.

The first theme for this series is Marriage and Relationships which are, perhaps, the greatest challenge facing our times today as women try to carve a new role for themselves in society and men seek working partners and have various desires, little known to them.

MR#01: First Marriage-Relationship Workshop

Sunday, 19 April, 2015 (Vaisakha Śukla Pratipada)
Venue
Conference Room II, Main Building, India International Centre, New Delhi

Topic

Every aspect of life is touched inconsiderable detail as a new bond is made. This implies every bhāva affecting the seventh bhāva of relationships in some manner or the other as well as the navāṁśa. Yet before we venture into the varga and other deeper subtleties of relationships, we need to understand the rāśi chart itself.

marriage1Matching is not just a guṇa score where the traditional belief that a high score indicates great marriage has already been proved to be so wrong. We plan this for a future workshop where we shall study guṇa matching in some detail. Our plan for the start is to do some useful jyotiṣa where we are going into the teachings of the purānic jyotiṣa.

① Lagna Matching and effect of ṣaḍāṣṭaka, dvirdvādasa and trikoṇa doṣa
② Lagneśa and Śubhapati (Rāśi Lord) Matching
③ Marriage Muhurta – Root principles
④ Sukha Bhāva: Marriage cannot last if either of the couple is suffering inside, and worse they don’t know why they suffer or what they seek in marriage. The effect of the ‘bhavat bhāvam’ principle.

Prerequisites

This workshop is not for rank beginners. You need to have some working knowledge of jyotiṣa like the twelve rāśi, their lords and natural friendships and nature of the graha (planets).
