Rāja-sambandha
yoga
Rāja means king
and sambandha means related to; hence, the word implies
relationships to royal or powerful families/people and such yogas
give a high status and lots of luxuries in addition to all the
comforts of life.

Chart 1: Princess Diana

In the chart of Princess Diana, the Moon is the ātmakāraka placed in
Virgo navāmśa (kārakāmśa). Examine navāmśa: Venus is in the fifth
house from the Moon and is also in the fifth house from kārakāmśa as
well as navāmśa lagna. Thus, the dictum related to Svamśa is
satisfied. Svamśa can mean both the navāmśa lagna as well as
kārakāmśa and in this case, they are the same confirming the
functioning of the raja-sambandha yoga. In the rāśi chart, Venus is
neither in lagna nor in the fifth house. However, kāraka lagna is
Capricorn as it is occupied by the ātmakāraka Moon. The fifth from
it is Taurus occupied by Venus, which is aspected by Jupiter (graha
dŕśťi) and both Jupiter and Moon (rāśi dŕśťi). Once again we find
the rāja-sambandha yoga applicable to the chart.
The ninth lord is Venus which is placed in the fifth house from the
Ātmakāraka indicating yet another rāja-sambandha yoga (BPHS 41.8).
Venus the planet causing the yoga is the cara and naisargika
dārākāraka and signifies the yoga functioning through the
institution of marriage. Venus is also a yogakāraka for Virgo lagna.
In timing rājayoga it is vital to choose the appropriate daśā for
the chart. This has been amply demonstrated in the previous case
studies. In this chart Caturasīti-sama daśā applies as the tenth
lord Mercury is in the tenth house.
Table : Chaturaseeti sama daśā (applicable if 10th lord is in 10th):
Moon: 1956-11-11 (3:26:34) - 1968-11-11 (5:25:17)
Mars: 1968-11-11 (5:25:17) - 1980-11-11 (7:07:31)
Merc: 1980-11-11 (7:07:31) - 1992-11-11 (9:02:47)
Jup: 1992-11-11 (9:02:47) - 2004-11-11 (10:50:36)
Ven: 2004-11-11 (10:50:36) - 2016-11-11 (12:43:54)
Sat: 2016-11-11 (12:43:54) - 2028-11-11 (14:32:07)
Sun: 2028-11-11 (14:32:07) - 2040-11-11 (16:20:42)
With the advent of the beneficial Mercury daśā, the raja-sambandha
yoga started functioning and she was deeply involved with HH Prince
Charles, scion of the British Royal family. Their marriage was
televised and she became famous due to the marriage besides having
all the luxury and paraphernalia of royalty.
Jupiter is the seventh lord (marriage) debilitated (fall,
destruction) and retrograde in the fifth house (love affairs) and
conjoined the sixth lord (enemy/ extra marital relationships)
Saturn. A person attains the status of the planet during its daśā
and with the advent of Jupiter daśā, their marriage suffered. She
separated from Prince Charles and was accused publicly of having
sexual relationships with servants of the royal household. Note that
the planet indicating the problem is Saturn ruling servants and is
also the lord of the sixth house. Jupiter daśā Saturn antardaśā
between April 1996 to January 1998 was the worst period when the
private life of the royal couple was brazenly published and debated
by the British press. This was the period of the end of raja-sambandha
yoga.
Thus, not only is the timing of rājayoga important but also the
timing of the period of setbacks and possible end to such rājayoga
(by using the appropriate daśā).
Chart 2: Jawaharlal Nehru

Rāja-sambandha yoga can take various shades and forms. One such yoga
we find in the navāmśa chart of Jawaharlal Nehru. The ātmakāraka
Moon is in Sagittarius navāmśa conjoined Venus and aspected by
Jupiter. The yoga conditions are satisfied. Since this occurs in the
navāmśa, it is likely to have a repercussion on the personal life of
Nehru as well. In the eleventh house from navāmśa lagna it indicates
a friend. There is another yoga that Venus is involved in with Mars
in the second house from navāmśa lagna indicating relationships. It
is well known fact that Jawaharlal Nehru was very close to Lady
Mountbatten during the period when Lord Mountbatten was the last
Viceroy of colonial India. Thus, the raja-sambandha yoga did give a
close friendship with Lady Mountbatten and it is also likely that
the Mars and Venus influence on the second house causing physical
relationships may have been activated.
The point is that the rājayoga should not be treated as occurring
independently and the planets, if involved in other yoga, will also
give their results simultaneously. Timing of the functioning of the
yoga is simple using Vimśottari daśā when the yoga functions without
hindrance during Moon daśā Venus antardaśā (1945–47). Lady
Mountbatten returned to England in 1947 but the effect of the yoga
did not end till her death later.
Raja-sambandha yoga indicates a good relationship and not carnal
pleasure. It shows maturity and rise due to a relationship or
friendship. Unless it occurs in the navāmśa chart, it should not be
taken to mean any form of physical relationship.
