Article: Viparita Rajayoga

The word 'viparita' means (1) turned round like a friend who becomes a foe or a foe who becomes a friend (2) reversed like good planet or indication becoming bad or bad planet becoming good, (3) inverted like a debilitated planet getting exalted or an exalted planet getting debilitated or one who is suddenly changing, (4) acting in a contrary manner like doing something unnatural and obviously opposite like favoring enemy or being bad to friend, like cutting the branch one is sitting on! Being unnatural, this is not sustainable over a long period and the results from a rajayoga (reversing bad to good) or duryoga (reversing good to bad) caused by this is temporary in nature. The position does not sustain but is favorable for politicians or such peole who just want to be at the top for s short while and then retire!

Definition & Concept

1. Vipareeta Rajyoga (VRY) is caused by the conjunction of the lords of Dusthana (evil houses 3rd, 6th, 8th & 12th ). Since the lords of the evil houses conjoin, they end up damaging each other and the native benefits. Thus, VRY implies coming to power/ gains due to the downfall or death of another. This can bring sudden legacies, rapid rise to power and position and other such gains that are basically, not sustainable over a long period of time.

2. The important condition for the fructification of this Rajyoga is that the planets involved should either (a) be weak by placement in a Dusthana (evil houses 3rd, 6th, 8th & 12th ) or in debility in Rasi/Navamsa OR (b) be very strong in Kendra/Trikona and simultaneously transfer the power to the Lord of Lagna (or Atmakaraka) by conjunction or aspect. Unless this transfer of the power of the VRY occurs, the native himself may not rise but will benefit due to the rise of another person. The results of the situations of VRY in the two cases is grossly different. In the first case, the native rises due to the death/ downfall of an enemy whereas in the latter situation the native rises after the death/downfall of an ally or friend. The significations of the planets conjoining the VRY maybe destroyed in this process.

3. t is evident from the above that the giver of Vipareeta Rajyoga is Saturn, more so since he is the natural significator of the Dusthana. Thus, VRY can also be caused if Saturn becomes a Yogakaraka (for Taurus & Libra Lagna) and is placed in a Dusthana in debility/weak. However, it is important that other planets should not conjoin this, else their significations could be destroyed.

4. Coming to the Arudha Lagna (AL), the rules are slightly different. Benefic planets placed in the 3rd/6th house from AL in strength in Rasi give spirituality (Success in spiritual life) whereas malefic planets so placed give Parakrama (Victory in material life). However, if the benefic planets placed in the 3rd/6th house are weak by being in debility/ in Rasi/Navamsa, then they will cause Vipareeta Rajyoga and will result in elevation in this material world. On the other hand if the malefic planets in the 3rd/6th from AL are weak or debilitated in Rasi/Navamsa, they will cause Vipareeta Pravrajya yoga and the native will become spiritual. [Timing] In both cases, this Yoga will function simultaneously with the death or downfall of the persons indicated by the lordship or signification of the planet involved in the Yoga.

5. In matters of strength, mere Sthana Bala (Positional strength) is not adequate. If the planet involved is placed in an inimical position from the ruling planet of the Arudha Lagna, it will be destroyed. For this purpose, besides Graha Sambandha (Relationship of planets), the Pachakadi Sambandha should be determined. Timing can be done both from Vimsottari as well as Narayana Dasa or any other suitable Phalita Dasa.

6. Pachakadi Sambandha has been explained by Sri Vyankatesha Sarma in his monumental classic “SARVARTHA CHINTAMANI” with the following stanza:

Pachak, Bodhak, Karak and Vedhak are the four important relationships that a planet has with others. Pachak literally means ‘digestor’ but actually refers to the ability of another to face the planet. For example, the Sun is very fiery and none can face him except Saturn. Thus Saturn is the natural Pachak for the Sun. Bodhak literally means ‘informative’ or the ‘knower of the reasons for his being’. Such a knowledgeable and understanding planet is bound to help him attain his purpose (or otherwise if the purpose is not beneficial). For example, for the Sun the Bodhak is Mars and helps the sun to attain its objective of ruling like the army helping the king. Karaka means ‘significator or doer’ and is different from the Bodhak in the sense that whereas the Bodhak has the knowledge of the goals, the Karaka need not have the knowledge but merely assists in the achievement of objective. Jupiter as the natural Karaka of the Sun ends up doing all the good work in his behalf just like an able Minister doing the good work in the name of the King. Vedhak means ‘piercing’ or ‘one that obstructs’ like having Vedha. It is the planet that can ‘see through the weaknesses’. Thus Venus becomes the Vedhak of the Sun just like dancing girls and excessive entertainment can divert the attention of an otherwise able and vigilant King. In this manner the NATURAL Pachak, Bodhak, Karak and Vedha of the other planets should be understood (Refer Table-1).

Finally, the Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagna should be carefully examined as per the rules given by Parasara in "Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra" and Maharishi Jaimini in his famous "Upadesa Sutra" to confirm the nature of the Rajyoga.

(A) LORDS OF DUSTHANA PLACED IN DUSTHANA
CASE#1: BUSINESSMAN

In Chart 1, the lords of the sixth and eighth houses are Venus and Jupiter and they conjoin in the sixth house thereby fulfilling the first criteria of conjunction and the second criteria of placement in a Dusthana (6th house in this case). For VRY in a Dusthana to function effectively, the planets involved should be weak {refer 2(a) above}. Venus is strong in its own Navamsa while Jupiter is strong in Aquarius Navamsa in the tenth house and is also conjoined the Moon in the Navamsa. Thus the Vipareeta Rajyoga becomes weak and will function only for a short time. The conjunction of the debilitated sun ensures the functioning of the VRY as debilitated planets will weaken the planets they conjoin.

Both Venus and Mars are Yogada for this horoscope as they own the sign or the seventh of the Ghatika Lagna, Hora Lagna and Lagna. Venus is more qualified as it also aspects the Lagna (Taurus-fixed sign) by Rasi drishti (Libra is a movable sign and movable signs aspect fixed signs except the one juxtapose). Thus Vipareeta Rajyoga should be accompanied by Dhana Yoga (Wealth as HL is prominently involved). During Jupiter Dasa Venus antardasa the native, hailing from amongst the poorest families became one of the richest men in the state and owned Crores of business.

However, just before he acquired this business in 1980, his father- in- law (Venus significator) expired. Since the planets involved were strong, this Yoga could not be sustained for long and he lost the entire business to his partners after four years in Jupiter Dasa Rahu antardasa.

(A) LORDS OF DUSTHANA PLACED IN DUSTHANA
CASE#2: POLITICIAN (HOME MINISTER OF INDIA)

Chart 2 is the horoscope of one of the senior most and respected politicians of Modern India, Shri Lal Krishan Advani. In this chart the Lords of the sixth house (Mars) and the eighth house (Mercury) conjoin in the 12th house resulting in Vipareeta Rajyoga. Just like the previous case the conjunction of the debilitated Sun and the fact of their dispositor (Venus as Lord of Libra) also being in debility makes this VRY very capable of giving Rajyoga of a high order.

There are two Yogada in the Rasi Chart. Saturn as the Lord of Hora Lagna (Capricorn HL) is placed in Lagna in Scorpio (fixed sign) and aspects the Ghatika Lagna (GL in Aries ) by Rasi Drishti (fixed sign aspects all movable signs except the one adjacent). Similarly, the Moon is the Lord of the seventh from Hora Lagna, is placed in Ghatika Lagna and aspects the Lagna. The strength of these Yogada is also vital to any chart. Here, the Moon is in exalted Navamsa (Krishna!!) and Saturn is Vargottama (occupied the same sign of Scorpio in Rasi and Navamsa) and is very strong and beneficial.

Such strong Rajyoga resulted in his becoming the Home Minister of India during Mercury antardasa (see VRY) of Jupiter Dasa. This VRY in all its color is again going to function during Jupiter dasa Venus antardasa from August 2000. Let us wait to see its POWERFUL results.

(B) LORDS OF DUSTHANA IN A KENDRA (QUADRANT HOUSE)
CASE#3: POLITICIAN (EX PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA)

Chart 3 is the horoscope of Shri P V Narasimha Rao, ex-Prime Minister of India (Birth time 12:49' LMT). The Lagna is Virgo and the Lords of the 3rd, 8th house (Mars) and 12th house (Sun) conjoin to form the Vipareeta Rajyoga. However this conjunction is in a quadrant and the conditions under Para 2(b) above apply in that these planets should be strong to give a long lease of political life. Besides these planets also conjoin the Lord of Lagna showing that the transfer of VRY Power has come to the individual. Both the Sun and Mars have Digbala (Directional Strength) in the tenth house and give tremendous executive abilities. Shri Narasimha Rao is credited with the most daring policy of liberalization of the Indian Economy. It maybe noted that Mars is very closely conjunct the Sun and is combust and weak due to this. Shri Narasimha Rao wore a RED CORAL in a gold ring for strengthening Mars in the right hand middle finger as the planets are placed in the Artha Trikona (trines to 2nd house) and influence the 'Madhyama' finger (middle finger: Refer Vedic Remedies in Astrology by your Author).

The Moon is the seventh Lord from Hora Lagna and aspects the Ghatika Lagna and Lagna (by Rasi drishti) thereby qualifying as a perfect Yogada. However, Mars is a more powerful Yogada as it has Graha Drishti (Planetary sight) on the Lagna (4th house special aspect), Ghatika Lagna (7th house aspect) and Hora Lagna (8th house special aspect). The sun is relatively much lower than the Moon and Mars, but has its own position as in the tenth, involved in VRY and aspecting the GL and Lagna by Rasi drishti, besides conjoining the Lord of Lagna.

(C) LORDS OF DUSTHANA IN A TRIKONA (TRINE HOUSE)
CHART#4 POLITICIAN (EX- PRIME MINISTER)

Chart 4 is the horoscope of the Late Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhi.

Leo Lagna rises with five planets in it. Such a combination would have either made him a great saint or a leader, and that he was. The Lords of the third house (Venus), eighth house (Jupiter) and the twelfth house (Moon) conjoin in the Lagna to form the Vipareeta Rajyoga. However for such a Rajyoga to fructify, they should be strong. Jupiter is exalted in the Navamsa, Moon is very weak in Paksha Bala (Dwiteeya Tithi) and Venus is in debilitated Navamsa. As the eighth lord Jupiter promises a huge inheritance and that including the political legacy (conjoins the Sun in Leo along with the Moon-Mother) of his famous mother (Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi).

It maybe noted that Venus is not only the third lord, but is also the Chara Bhratrikaraka (BK). Moon is not only the natural significator for Mother but is also the Chara Matrikaraka (MK). However for some astrologers who use only seven Chara Karaka, this will be completely altered. We however, continue in the line of the illustrious Parasara and use the eight Chara karaka. Since these Chara Karaka are so weak and involved in the Vipareeta Rajyoga, this VRY functioning would be after their death. Both his mother and younger brother Late Sanjay Gandhi died premature deaths by assassination and plane crash respectively. Thereafter in Rahu Dasa JUPITER antardasa he inherited the political legacy of his mother and became the youngest Prime Minister of India. Thus in VRY in trines the strength of planets is very vital. Jupiter exalted in Navamsa and VRY conjoining the Lagna Lord ensured that he did enjoy the Rajyoga in this lifetime.

The HL is in Lagna and conjoins five planets that also aspect the GL. Thus there are five clean Yogada in this chart showing the very high level of Rajyoga. Such horoscopes are very rare. The last days are seen in the third from AL. AL is in Taurus and the third house (always reckoned in the direct order for this purpose) is cancer that is conjoined Rahu. Mercury is the Atmakaraka & 2nd Lord from Lagna and is qualified to punish. He was assassinated in Rahu dasa Mercury antardasa. What is most noteworthy for the future is that Jupiter is the Lord of the fifth house and indicates a child who will inherit this mantle from the father. Neither Saturn, Rahu nor Upapada associate with the VRY so clearly as Jupiter. Thus there is no doubt that Rajyoga should also be present in the horoscope of one of his children.

(D) VIPAREETA RAJYOGA FROM MALEFIC YOGAKARAKA
CHART#5 BUREAUCRAT

In this Chart 5, the native started his career as a Science lecturer (the 10th Lord conjoins Jupiter). Saturn is the lord of both the best trine (ninth house) and the best Quadrant (tenth house) and is an undisputed Yoga karaka for Taurus Lagna. Besides being a natural malefic, this yoga normally does not come in the best of ways and its placement in the 12th house gives it the capability of giving suo-moto Rajyoga. However the blessings of the debility of the Saturn are made sour by the conjunction of Jupiter. As the 8th lord, its placement in the 12th house is auspicious but, Jupiter is the natural significator of Children, especially sons. As per the Para 3, the significations of the planet conjoining the malefic Yoga karaka Saturn placed in a Dusthana leads to VRY but there will be destruction of its significations. The native became an IAS officer (Premier service in the Indian Bureaucracy) but lost his only son at a young age. Thereafter he turned a new leaf and ascribed to a spiritual order and went on to become the Chief secretary (Top most position) in a State. When Saturn is the ninth lord, the native has misfortunes until he ascribes to a spiritual order. Thereafter he has Rajyoga. In this case, the ninth Lord conjoins Jupiter; hence the spiritual order shall be one that worships the Guru in some form (Shirdi Sai Baba). The death of the son was in a drowning incident.

(E) VIPAREETA RAJYOGA FROM ARUDHA LAGNA

The standard text like Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, Jaimini sutras etc states that malefic planets in the third and sixth house give courage and consequential employment in the army etc. Natural benefics placed in the third and sixth houses do not make a person cowardly, but produce belief in ahimsa (i.e. the path of non- violence) and give rise to spiritualism and saints. A number of situations can arise by the placements of planets in the sixth house from Arudha Lagna. For a detailed lesson including illustrations, see Viparita Rajayoga II
