The rules for assigning numerical values to the letters are -
-
Each of the Sanskrit vowels have a zero value (Table-1) and,
-
Each of the consonants Ka, Ta, Pa & Ya have a numerical value of
one, hence the name Katapayadi Varga.
-
The
consonants following these have a sequentially higher numerical
value (Table 2)

Write the word of the stanza in Devanagari script and remove the
“matra’s” and incomplete/half letters. The numerical value of the
remaining letters should be written sequentially and the number so
obtained should be reversed. Divide this by 12. The remainder gives
the sign/house referred to in the stanza.
Illustration
For example, the word ‘dara’ has two full letters ‘da’, and ‘ra’, of
numerical value ‘8’, & ‘2’, respectively as da is the eighth
alphabet in the Ta Group and ra is the second alphabet in the Ya-Group.
Therefore dara = 82,
Reverse the number = 28.
Now, 28 divided by 12 leaves a reminder of 4.
Hence, ‘dara’, would mean the fourth house or the fourth sign i.e.
Cancer, depending on the context.
Usage
Maharishi Jaimini has used this Katapayadi varga to hide the numbers
of houses within words. For example in the sloka 'Swatste daraH' we
find that the word Swa is composed of only one complete alphabet Va
which implies the number '4'. the other word is dara which we have
already seen refers to the number '4'. Thus Maharishi was giving a
vital rider to the Arudha Pada calculation in the stanza by telling
us that if the planet is in the fourth house from its own sign, then
the Arudha pada shall be in the fourth house itself (instead of the
seventh).
This gives us a vital hint about using the Katapayadi Varga. We can
use this to determine the Zodiac sign hidden within the names of
people and companies and see if the same is beneficial or otherwise
