Sleep Direction

The direction in which we sleep plays a vital role in automatically charging the body for the next day. Sleep is the natural means to rest and rejuvenate. It heals the mind and the body. In an average we sleep for a third part of our lives and this this activity decides how well we are living and enjoying life in this planet.

The Śiva Mahāpurāṇa has some vital pointers to the results we get when we sleep in the eight directions
narayana

FEET POINT RESULT DIG
East Āyus Longevity Sun
South-East Dveṣa Enmity Venus
South Maraṇa Death Mars
South-West Pāpa Sin Rāhu
West Bhāgya Destiny Saturn
North-West Vyādhi Disease Moon
North Puṣṭi Prosperity Mercury
North-East Śaktī Power Jupiter

Try it Yourself

Use a compass to determine the direction of the feet when you sleep on your bed. Sit on the bed and face the direction you normally place your feet. Now read the results from the table above.

  1. If the results are negative, and if you are under adverse transits and daśā, the negative will surely manifest.
  2. If the results are negative, and if you are under positive transits and daśā, the negative will be supressed and even if you are feeling weak and depressed, the negative is unlikely to manifest.
  3. If the results are positive, and if you are under adverse transits and daśā, the you will have the strength and forbearance to overcome the negative
  4. If the results are positive, and if you are under good transits and daśā, the good fortune promised will surely manifest

In view of the above, it would be wise to choose a favourable direction of sleep.

Jyotiṣa Understanding

It is difficult to understand the results ascribed by Lord Śiva from jyotiṣa view. If we consider the dig chakra (directions of the graha), we find that longevity is promised when we are awaking in the direction of Sūrya (E). Similarly, good results of prosperity (N) and power (NE) are promised when awaking in the directions of Mercury and Jupiter i.e. feet point these directions when we sleep. Now, if we consider ‘Lagna’ as the point of rejuvenation, then the three planets that are positive for this are (a) lagna kāraka Sun and (b) planets that get digbala in lagna – Mercury and Jupiter.

It is evident that the results are based on the ‘rising’ or awakening. Awakening or rising is associated with Janma Lagna which is the rising sign.

Future Experiments Required

Future experiments are required to ascertain the effect of lagneśa direction. For example, if a person is born in Cancer Lagna, the lagneśa is Moon and will always work to the benefit of the native. Question is “would the direction of the Moon (NW) be beneficial for sleeping (and awakening)?”

Similarly, planets placed in Lagna are beneficial and maybe their directions would turn out to be positive. All this needs some serious study and experiments.

Upadeśa

For the present, we would recommend using the advice of Lord Śiva and stick to the direction of the kāraka and the digbala planets i.e. sun (E), Mercury (N) and Jupiter (NE). The western direction is quite ambiguous and the word ‘bhāgya’ can also mean durbhāgya i.e. misfortune. It causes a person to float in this world without direction – swayed by the winds of destiny.

  1. My Doubt Is, Geomagnetic Force Says
Head Facing East When We Sleep We Gain Energy, Head Facing West We Lose Energy.
Since I Don’t Know Shiva Or Any “Diety”

Which Side To Chose Between East And West Then?
    You Are Confusing Me

  2. Another aspect while sleeping with head in the east region(west rising) — about bhagya — I strongly believe Lord Shiva meaning Good bhagya–

    Reasoning —
Saturn signifies difficulties, sorrow — but it only gives what the soul deserves to learn — in the form of experiences
Learning good things or rather correct things through negative experiences — that is the ultimate lesson of Saturn —

Venus listens to Saturn –explained by boons won by daityas by propitiating Brahma or Shiva — might have a large scale impact, but since they lack sattva, the impact of these boons yield negative results for themselves — result of impure sankalpa. Temporal success of boons getting executed in this life , but the happiness is short lived, — nothing compares to moksha.(Eg.)

Shows why difficult positions of Saturn in horoscope might ultimately yield good results in a later time for a native( based on horoscope analysis) or might not as well, depending on aspects, karakatva etc.(Eg.)

Rahu Ketu are retrograde by default – Saturn isnt — Which means natural significations for Saturn is good for the native –not necessarily temporal or vice versa (temporal is good)

Saturn retrograde in a horoscope probably means lack of direction, lack of intuition, atheistic tendencies, mocking vedic principles — could also mean lack of god’s grace– depending on relative strength of jupiter of course and saturn’s house and sign placement.

People misunderstand this planet, but Saturn can confer sattva through hardships — and can confer tamasika abode in the future through temporal enjoyments as well (by aspect of non participation in karmic improvements — venus is too strong / 6th house has rahu/ketu/ mars/ sun/ saturn)– interpretations of long term are more important while reading a satvik person’s horoscope and not so much for people worried about their mundane existence (!)

in any case SE rising while waking up is negative — for manushyas, venus has meaning only as an enabler to leverage hardships/ suffering/ to get through difficulties and — putting up a venusian goal(attachment to pleasures and getting egoistic about it) leads to eternal samsara and zilch learning.

Goals should be related to Jupiter carrying forth the calm temperament of moon using sun, venus and mars as enablers with a dispassionate intellect like the dualistic mercury and using Saturn for optimistic pessimism(realism).

That is how Shadow planets Rahu and ketu will cease to exist , in the future life of moksha.

  3. very illuminating afterthought on 8directions given by lord Shiva.
my take on this — the alignment while sleeping has more to do with the positional alignment when you wake up with respect to vastu purusha.
    1) As you rise, if you face vastu purusha
    2) As you rise, if you face away from vastu purusha
    3) As you rise, if vastu purusha in on your right side
    4) As you rise, if vastu purusha is on your left side
    5) Proximity to the head portion of vastu purusha

Consider the above 4 points — points 1 and 3 are benevolent — which explains why as you wake up towards west — vastu purusha is very close you on the right side( points 3 and 5) — so although you face away – its a good thing

NW rising — although moon is a benefic planet — as per alignment you will be in an angle perpendicular to vastu purusha — if you see closely — the only alignment against vastu purusha (NE-SW) is the axis of (NW-SE) because it is perpendicular — when energies are perpendicular to each other they are indifferent to each other —

Same with SE rising — even worse — because you are facing the left side of vastu purusha as you wake up.

Evil entities attack a person from the left side . A pious and god fearing person with personal strength of mantras and invocation cannot be dared attack from his right side —

Evil entities also prefer to attack from behind as the back portion is out of the scope of a person’s agnya chakra — things which are hidden from the naked eye prefer to be hidden from the third eye as well – a lesson in elusive offence.

The vastu purusha is a deified personality — Just like we face the deity in the temple while worshipping — in the same way, while you rise, you should salute the head portion of the vastu purusha —
