Historic: Al-Qaeda War Declaration

On 10 September 1988 at Peshawar, Pakistan (34n01, 71e33) Osama binLaden declared war aainst the United States of America. This is the founding of terrorist network of radical Muslims calling for global jihad, the name can be seen as “al-Qaeda” or “al-Qaida.” According to pages 21-22 of Bergen’s book listed in the source notes, Osama bin Laden first public statement that he was at war with the United States was issued on August 23, 1996, three months after his expulsion from Sudan.” Ref: AstroDatabank https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Historic:_al-Qaeda
The origins of al-Qaeda can be traced to the Soviet War in Afghanistan (Dec 1979 – Feb 1989). It is evident that Osama binLaden was a hero in Saudi Arabia after his success in Afghanistan and would not be at war with the US in 1989, even if he had plans or motives.

Background

1957: Osama is born in Riyadh. He is 17th child (among 52 children!) sired by Muhammad Bin Laden, Saudi Arabia’s wealthiest construction magnate.
1979: Osama graduates from King Abdul Aziz University in Jiddah with a degree in civil engineering.
1979, 26 Dec: Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Osama leaves Saudi Arabia to join the Afghan resistance (mujahedeen). He never worked Civil Eng in father’s business nor any job. Clearly the 9th lord must be in kṣaya bhāva.
1980-86: From Pakistan border, Osama gathers funds for mujahedeen and provides logistical and humanitarian aid.
1986-89: Osama is involved in many battles in the Afghan war against the Soviets as a guerilla commander, including the fierce battle of Jalalabad which led the Soviets to finally withdraw from Afghanistan. Receives hero’s welcome in Saudi Arabia on return.
1988, 10 Sep: Osama establishes “al Qaeda,” an organization of ex-mujahedeen and other supporters. Its mission is to channel fighters and funds to the Afghan resistance.
