Maṅgalika Doṣa

mangala_tuesday
Maṅgalika doṣa is a flaw of the energy processing system in the native. Mars (maṅgala) represents agni tattva and when this is flawed, the energy gets directed to wrong purposes and the result is terrible waste of both resources and time in addition to much suffering and pain.

It is interesting to note that the ancient seers did not attribute so much flaw to the placement of other planets including Saturn as has been placed on the placement of Mars. This is because we live in bhūrloka, the earth-plane and the devatā who is the guardian deity of this plane is ‘Agni’. In jyotiṣa this translates to Mars as it represents Agni tattva. The planets representing the guardians for the sapta-loka are in the order of the horā: Mars (bhūrloka), Sun (bhuvarloka), Venus (svarloka), Mercury (maharloka), Moon (janarloka), Saturn (taparloka) and Jupiter (satyaloka).

Defining Maṅgalika Doṣa

Maṅgalika Doṣa is an astrological combination that occurs if Mars (maṅgala) is placed in specific houses in the horoscope. Ancient seers have listed five houses for maṅgalika doṣa as the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th bhāva. Astrologers of some traditions add the lagna as well while others add lagna and remove the 2nd bhāva.

The reason why the ancient seers avoided the lagna was because of the dictum that any planet placed in lagna ultimately becomes favourable as lagna is the seat of the praise-worthy one. Now if we are going to praise Mars when it is placed in lagna, how can we do so if it is also causing maṅgalika doṣa. An argument to the contrary would be that Saturn in lagna is very inauspicious and the counter to that is the special condition of maraṇa kāraka sthāna. Since Saturn in lagna is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, it is inauspicious and this does not apply to any other planet. In fact, Saturn is the only planet which gives good results when weak and when strong it can cause much suffering and all the evils promised by it will be fully experienced in the lifetime. Therefore there seems to be very sound logic in the ancients using only five houses viz. 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, for the definition of maṅgalika doṣa.

Maṅgalika Groups

Further, these houses are in two or three groups depending on viewpoint:

1. In the first viewpoint, there are two groups:
(A) Sukha (happiness) or śānti (peace) trikoṇa of 4th, 8th and 12th bhāva which becomes aśānti trikoṇa bringing in irritation, agitation and conflict instead, and
(B) Śrīmanta bhāva consisting of 2nd and 7th houses which are naturally owned by Venus (Taurus, Libra are the 2nd and 7th houses of nature). Venus is the naisargika Kalatra kāraka and of jala tattva whereas Mars ruling agni tattva, destroys all that is so auspicious for saṁsāra (worldly life) when in these 2nd or 7th houses.

2. In the second viewpoint, there are three groups:
(A) chaturaśra of 4th and 8th bhāva which are the pillars of home and health and Mars placed in these houses can destroy properties and cause a person to wander like a vagabond
(B) śubha (auspicious) yoga of 2nd and 12th houses becomes aśubha (inauspicious) yoga with Mars in these houses and the blessings of a clean intellect are lost to terrible conflict in relationships in family and work
(C) maraṇa kāraka sthāna of Mars is the 7th bhāva where instead of love and enjoyments of this bhūrloka (earth plane), destiny brings many battles to your door

Either way, together these are the 2nd, 7th, 4th, 8th and 12th houses. For a proper understanding and application of maṅgalika doṣa, both these viewpoints have to be used and reconciled to see the expression of results in life.

Therefore when Mars is in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th bhāva, the native has maṅgalika doṣa which can make life on earth like a jail term. The native feels very trapped in circumstances related to the bhāva in question and this impacts personal life as the tendency is to blame ones dear ones for all the maladies of life. Such an attitude results in great suffering for the spouse as well and estrangement by divorce, death or abandonment occurs.

Maṅgalika Chandra Lagna

Please note that the maṅgalika doṣa from the Moon sign is slightly different. It includes the 1st, 7th, 4th, 8th and 12th houses where the 2nd is replaced by the 1st house. Planets in the 2nd bhāva from the Moon are considered very auspicious as they herald good fortune whereas Sasi-Maṅgala yoga of Moon-Mars is a Rudra yoga bringing in much strife in personal life leading to an adulterous behaviour. Such natives have multiple relationships.

  2. Pranaam Acharya,

According to Dr. B. V. Raman, Kuja Dosha nullifies in the following conditions –
    a. If Mars is in 2nd house in any of the signs of Mercury, i.e., Gemini or Virgo.
    b. If Mars is in 4th house in own sign, i.e., Aries or Scorpio.
    c. If Mars is in 7th house in exaltation or debilitation, i.e., Capricorn or Cancer.
    d. If Mars is in 8th house in any of the signs of Jupiter, i.e., Sagittarius or Pisces.
    e. If Mars is in 12th house in any of the signs of Venus, i.e., Taurus or Libra.
    f. If Mars is in any house in Aquarius or Leo.

What are your takes on that ?

  3. Dear Sanjay Prabhu:
Can you explain if there can be a cancelation of Mangalika dosa? Is it explained in sastra or any other pramana? Thank you very much.

  4. Sanjay Ji:

what is the solution for Mangalika dosha ?. I believe bhagavan provides a solution to every problem.

I have Mangal in the 4th house (debilitated & retro ) and my wife has Mangal in the 4th house (Exalted ). My real estate investments are not very fruitful and don’t own a home yet .

    Regards

  5. Sanjay ji,

So how does one control strong Mars in seventh, if Pearl “cannot be worn” based on the birth chart..? ( Kumbha Lagna )

Can Blue Sapphire control Mars in case Blue Sapphire “can be worn” based on the Birth Chart…? ( Kumbha Lagna- Saturn in eleventh house ) Or Saturn mantra is better..?

Or do you think Saturn cannot control Mars in this case.?

    Regards

  6. My son with Cancer lagna has mars, Jupiter, rahu in second ( DOB:10-01-1980, BOMBAY, 19:39hrs.) his wife with Leo lagna has mars Saturn in second(DOB:01-04-1982,DELHI, 16:15hrs). married on 23-11-2011. have frequent quarrels. Now they are blessed with son. Whether they will have peaceful and continued married lif.

  7. Om Namasivaya! Dear Sanjayji Namaste, Thank u. Your analysis is perfectly correct. I got luck from her i.e. after marriage I became well-off viz job, career, children, wealth etc. I have five children, the eldest being a girl is married and well settled. Then three boys and last girl–none of them married. In Bhava chalit chart (Sripathi) my guru goes to 5th from lagna (Virgo), mercury to Leo, Venus to cancer and Saturn to Makara with Rahu. No change for other planets. Is it KARAKAO BHAVA NASAYA working ?

  8. Om Namasivaya! Dear Sanjayji Namaste. My wife’s Mars in Capricorn, 8th from her lagna(Gemini) along with Moon, 2nd lord. Virgo occupied by Sun, ven and mer. Lib by Rahu, capr by Mars and moon, pis by jup(R). Aries by Sat(R) and Ketu. I am 81 years old and my wife is 75 years old. My Rasi data : Taurus lagna, cancer occupied by Mars AND Ketu, LEO OCCUPIED BY SUN, VENUS AND MOON, VIRGO BY MERCURY, CAPRICORN BY RAHU, Aquarius by Sat(R). We were never separated. I am still alive with some ailments. How is it my wife’s Mars in 8th from lagna has not killed me.

    1. Her Upapada UL is in Makara with exalted Mars and Moon and your Lagna is in trikona to that which is excellent. But it can give a short tempered spouse. She has powerful rajayoga in Makara which is very good for husband and in addition, dominant yoga is hamsa yoga with very strong 7th Lord guru … BUT, your are forgetting the PARIVARTANA YOGA between Mars and Saturn …effectively, Mars is as if in Mesha and Saturn is as if in Makara …so husband lives very very long and so does she.
Secondly, Mangalika dosha does not simply mean death of spouse all the time.

  9. Sanjay Sirjee
The article is informative as always so.
What if Mangal is Lagn Lord and placed in any of these houses of Mangal dosha? If, as it is said, that Lagnesh will always give auspicious results.

  10. Dear Sanjay Rath,
Liked the article, but will be complete,if you comment on the exceptions to mangalika dosha in various classics. As far as my experience the dosha does not get cancelled ,but toned down due to the aspect of jupiter from a position of strength without getting afflicted by the aspect of any natural malific

    1. No it is not nullified. Sri Ram of Cancer Lagna had to suffer separation from his dear Sita Mata due to mangal (Mars) in 7H.
Some books say Mars in exaltation does not indicate this, but you see Lord Rama had separation.

  11. Dear Sanjay,
As usual thoughts on Mangal Dosha are brilliant .In light of BPHS i seek you to explain the term Benefic planet as applicable , it is Natural benefic or functional benefic? Context is mentioned below.
Mangal Dosha is a widly discussed topic.in BPHS compilation a sloka apears in Chapter 82,vide sloka 47that lays down yoga formation causing death of husband. In the same chapter sloka 48 and 49 lays down cancillation of this yoga.
By the way compilation of BPHS Published by Ranjan Publications also have these sloka in Chapter 80 at same serial. This chapter belongs to Volume II and is supposed to have been translated by someon else .
The point is translation is different for same sloka.
Look Sri Girish chandra Sharma : sloka 47: If Mars is bereft of the aspect or conjunction of the auspicious planets and is posited in the ascendant, in the 12th house, the fourth house. the 7th house or the 8th house,(in the nativity of a women), the husband of such women will certainly have an early death.
Ranjan publication: The women born becomes a widow , if Mars be in the 12th,4th,7th,or 8th from the ascendant unaspected by or associated with any benefic.
    COMMENTS:
Houses where placement of Mars reckoned from Lagna causes Yoga
are as said by SRI GCSHARMA are :ASC,XII,IV,VII VIII total Five They are Lagna axis and Sukha trikona IV VIII XII.
Whereas Ranjan Translation says: XII,IV,VII , VIII FROM ascendant.Only four houses.
Now coming to condition , which is ignored by all is :
Such a placement of Mars should not have yuti and aspect from Benefic Planet.
    The term is “subhadrigyogaheenae”
Thus an inbuilt condition is implied and Yoga for early death of husband will be made only when Mars is in Lagna axis and sukhatrikona But without yuti and aspect from a benefic planet.
Ranjan translation says also same condition but placement of Mars in Ascendant is missing.
So parasar Does not treat mars in II house for this yoga.
Thus One thing is certain , Mars dosha does not occur only by occupation of Mars in ASC VII, IV,VIII and XII but such a Mars should not have influence of Benefic by yuti( conjunction) and Grah dristi( Aspect)
Parasara Does not talk of any affect other than early death of spouse[ see next two sloka in same chapter].thus saying that mars dosa causes divorce, abandonment may be wishful thinking.
In this context , next two sloka of Parasar are also important for they talk of cancillation of Early death of Husband.
The essence of condition of cancillation is If a male with a yoga for early widowhood marries a women having also a yoga for early death of husband, death of either does not happen.
Generally this Yoga is named Mangal dosha in Charts .
Whatever is added to this concepts is either a logical extension of basic rules of astrology by authors other than risis,.
The explanation of Benefic planet is required here , it is Natural benefic or functional benefic? that completes definition of early death of Spouse.
    with regards,
    Rameshcsrivastava
