Futures studies (also called futurology) is the study of postulating possible, probable, and preferable futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them. There is a debate as to whether this discipline is an art or science. Vedāñga also include such studies and it was hotly debated whether jyotiṣa as a vedāñga should merit inclusion in the science or arts stream by the Government of India. Finally, it was decided to add it to the Arts stream in various universities and colleges.
In general, it can be considered as a branch of the social sciences and parallel to the field of history. History studies the past, social studies examines the present while futurology postulates the future. Futurology seeks to predict what is likely to continue and what could change. Part of the discipline thus seeks a systematic and pattern-based understanding of past and present, and to determine the likelihood of future events and trends. Vedāñgas provide various tools for this purpose – jyotiṣa examines the past, present and future trends whiles chhandas provides various mantras and prayers (as a part of vedic dharma) as well as religious pūjā and related activities, to mitigate negative trends and vouchsafe the future.
Various vedic tools like jātaka (corresponds to horoscopy), praśna (the query), gaṇita vidyā like akṣara-varga (vedic numerology), muhūrta (auspicious time) etc., are used to look into the future of an individual, a relationship or an institution or even a business.
वेदाङ्ग विनयन (vedāṅga vinayana) is the process of acquiring vedic knowledge through a qualified instructor. Vedic knowledge has six limbs and a qualified instructor would have knowledge of some of them at least. These instructions are for life and are life changing. They enhance the spiritual experience and is considered a necessary religious activity. These are very educational and give you a very good understanding of your life and processes, impulses, drives, abilities and weaknesses. They include a study of your life using various tools like Jyotisa charts, Vedic numerology etc. Mantras are taught and religious advice like fasts and festivals are recommended.
